Puzzling Pink Sludge on Isolated Tasmanian Shoreline Prompts Anxiety of Likely Phytoplankton Proliferation
Officials in the island state are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has materialized on a isolated coast, with a number of researchers worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.
Extensive Appearance Across Shore
The magenta-hued slime appeared along a portion of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been documented on parts of another local beach and a separate bay.

A campaigner, who took samples of the rosy slime in Tasmania, commented it appeared the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and indicated the salmon farming industry was the most likely culprit, pointing to similar cases in other places.
"Thus the state needs to deliver a strong warning here, the government and the environmental agency need to respond to this. We need to examine the examples we've gathered and we need to inform the public here," she said.
The scientist said she had concerns for public safety after experiencing a numbness along her limbs and skin while being sprayed with affected seawater.

An advocacy organization has reported dead octopus and dead sea cucumbers washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner calling the event as an "ecological crisis" and calling on the government head to visit and "assume command the effort that government must be making".
