Matteo Cancellieri Shows Glimpses of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The atmosphere at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in a total of 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or had there never been a binding element keeping it intact in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as head coach in the summer transfer window, only for him to later acknowledge that the board had failed to disclose the transfer ban they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that his departure was imminent were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Biancocelesti became as messy in their performances as they were off it, defeating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining first five games, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or imploding.

Matteo's Surprising Comeback

One individual kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to feature for Lazio during this campaign. He spent the previous campaign with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, Lazio were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to reduce their roster without replacements.

He signed initially under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those as a substitute. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was persistently working to work out the specific characteristics of Cancellieri's abilities. Labeled as a wide forward on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for most of that campaign as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances while playing for Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
