Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
